The Romans were using terracotta for their roof tiles, over 2000 years ago. They turn up on every archaeological dig in the country. Sometimes still intact.

In Wales, we have the first recorded use of slate for roofing, dating to around 1300AD. That’s over 700 years of continuous usage. Make no mistake, slates and tiles are the best possible roofing material. And we love them.

Slate looks great on a roof. Check the photos on this page. Its beautiful. Typically, it will last between 125-150 years, although with care, its not uncommon to see 200 years. Its always a good investment

There are three types of slate available for roofing. Natural, artificial and zinc. Each is a great choice, especially for a traditional property. As proud Welsh people, we have to recommend Welsh slate, as being the ultimate roofing material. Why wouldn’t we use it ?

The use of slate for a roofing material peaked around 100 years ago. Slate is wonderful, but it’s a little labour intensive to lay, so inevitably more modern versions were introduced, made from clay or concrete. These tiles are slightly more user friendly, and come in a vast array of finishes and colours. They can be chosen to match the look of any property and are particularly well suited to contemporary homes.

If you choose slate or tile, you can be guaranteed a long lasting and attractive roof that will outlast you, and probably your children too.

• Slate will last 125 years at a minimum. Tile will last at least 75 years. With the average roof only lasting 30 years, you are investing for generations.
• Slate is only available in grey. But in a large number of finishes, textures and patterns. Tiles come in a vast number of colours and finishes. There is a slate or tile to match your home, no matter how crazy your styling.
• Slate and tile are sustainable products. Slate in particular is a carbon-zero product. They are both environmentally friendly. Plus they last for generations, and can even be reused and recycled. Perfect environmental credibility.
• Slate and tile are both highly fire resistant. They stop fire spreading.
• Slate is completely frost and mould resistant.

Making the choice of slate or tile is initially a more expensive investment. But their incredible durability and longevity means they are a fantastic choice. Virtually maintenance free too. And when you come to sell, a slate or tiled roof puts value on your home. With slate or tile, you just cannot lose.

We really love slate and tile. It’s the perfect roofing material. It looks great and it will still be looking great when we are all gone. So make a choice that will show your good taste in 200 years. You know it makes sense.
