The BUR system, or Built Up Roofing, has been used in the UK for over 90 years. It consists of alternating layers of asphalt and reinforcing fabrics, and is finished off with an aggregate top coat. BUR is incredibly water resistant. It is ideal for flat, or low slope roofs, and is extremely tough and durable

BUR will stick to almost any surface, as long as it’s in good condition. It also adheres to vertical surfaces, and even when damaged, it won’t allow any moisture to seep underneath it. Its flexible too, and resists cracking.

Modern felts have taken advantage of the latest polymer technology and the latest membranes are incredibly easy to use, as well as being completely fireproof. They are also carbon neutral, so extremely environmentally friendly.

The standard BUR system has an average lifespan of 15 to 20 years, but the new high performance felts will last at least 30 years, and probably far longer. They cost 25% more, but that cost is easily offset against its long life.

​BUR is ideal for large roofing areas, and is most commonly seen on schools, factories, leisure centres and hospitals.
